Flat Roofing

Sometimes a flat roof can be the only way achieve the required shape of a functional roof section. The material for the job is often a difficult decision to make. Especially with an increasing amount of cheaper man-made alternatives. The truth is they are a false economy as their unproven lifespan can mean it will need to be replaced much sooner than you might think.

Lead gives you an unrivalled life span along with an attractive visual aspect. Unlike bitumen and fibreglass flat roofs that over a couple decades degrade to look tired and worn, lead weathers to its signature grey finish and remains effective for generations. For this reason, lead is chosen to transform a flat roof from a functional roof section to an aesthetically pleasing feature of a building.

Constantine Bay

This was a large roof, needing over 100m of lead ridges, and hips, and two flat roofs. The biggest challenge was overcoming a design issue which caused one corner of the flat roofs to end up higher than planned.

Lundulph Church

This charming historic Cornish village church had an ancient lead roof dating from 1806. Covered in graffiti and signatures of people from long ago, it was a shame to have to remove the lead. It was made from extremely thick code 12 sand-cast lead that had served its purpose for longer than most lead roofs.

Constantine Bay Window

This building has two code 5, flat topped bay windows in symmetry on the rear elevation.

Trevlaga

This was a relatively straightforward flat roof, including lead soffit and facia details, along with the standard ventilation detail. Situated high up on the North Cornish coast, it required extra strong fixings suited to the high exposure.

Clad Bay Window

This bay window has vertical cladding to break down the large head area of the elevation. It also has vent slots incorporated into the soffits to allow for adequate ventilation to the underside of the roof deck.

Yelverton

This is the largest job I’ve completed to date. Over 8 tons of lead in total. Here are some before and after photos. It was a significant challenge regarding the logical phased work to keep the building dry during an exceptionally wet Autumn.

Trevone

This was a very challenging job both at the design phase and installation. Because of the unusual shape, working out the outlet position, the gutter depths, fall directions and ventilation locations took a lot of careful consideration.

Bedford Hotel, Tavistock

This roof had suffered from the condensation corrosion created because of a lack of any ventilation details and no underlay. The roof was renewed with code 6 lead, and crucially - the introduction of ventilation profiles allowing the free flow of air to release any moisture created from the rooms below.

Herringbone Flat Roof

This interesting flat roof was specified by the architect to have a herringbone design to allow all 3 sides to have a completely flat appearance from ground level. It has raised vented edges all around.

Rectory porch

This porch roof was being overhauled from the existing bitumen flat roof and old roof lantern which was beyond repair. This new lantern was being fitted to provide light into the room below but also to improve the view from the 2 rooms overlooking the roof.
